Meet Giovanni Docherty, Lowellville’s Junior High Cross Country Coach! Giovanni is a junior majoring in exercise science at Youngstown State University and he plans on attending graduate school to become a physical therapist. He is a Lowellville alumni who has five years of cross country experience, one year as a junior high coach and four years as a high school coach.
Previously, Giovanni was a volunteer coach for the track and field season. When he was offered the junior high position he knew that coaching would allow him to “experience working with individuals in an athletic environment.” He recognized that coaching would give him a general background to common running injuries, treatments, and how to communicate about these injuries.
Throughout the season Giovanni tried his best to teach his athletes how to carry themselves through a race without stopping. He noted that he saw improvement in his runners’ physical and mental abilities with each practice and race. When asked what his favorite thing about coaching is he said, “It feels good knowing I can help runners correct the mistakes I once made during my time running.”
