Lowellville High School welcomes Mr. Wilkins to their staff as an Intervention Specialist. He has been teaching for six years and previously worked at Summit Academy in Warren, Ohio where he taught kids with ADHD and Autism.
Before he started teaching, Mr. Wilkins studied telecommunications, audio production, and video production at Ohio University. He lived in New York City and worked for the Carson Daly Show on NBC where he often ran errands and picked up equipment. In 2001 he moved back to the Youngstown area and earned his Bachelor’s degree from Youngstown State University in 2005.
Mr. Wilkins decided to go back to school and earned his Masters Degree in Special Education. When he saw a job opening at Lowellville, he thought it would be cool to work here because his great grandmother, Vernice Darrow, was a teacher here in 1898. Mr. Wilkins favorite part about being an educator is being able to help his students understand what is going on and helping them learn new things. He stated,”You hit a certain point in life where you want to pass on your knowledge and contribute more.”
In his free time Mr. Wilkins enjoys spending time with his wife, Marcy, and two children, Ellie (8) and Julia (5). On the weekends, he sings and plays piano with his band, The Richie Wilkins Trio. His band specializes in swing, which is a style of jazz developed in the United States during the late 1920’s and early 1930’s. Mr. Wilkins has been taking piano lessons since 1986 and hasn’t stopped playing since.
Mr. Wilkins brings a lot of unique experiences to Lowellville High School, and he’s excited to help the students learn and grow this year.
