On February 9, 2025, two of the best teams in the NFL played in the biggest game of the year, the Super Bowl. The teams that faced off were the Eagles representing the NFC and the Chiefs representing the AFC. Both teams were highly seeded with the Eagles being the two seed and the Chiefs being the one seed meaning they received a bye week during the playoffs. The Chiefs’ defense going into the Super Bowl was ranked at number nine which doesn’t seem bad until you compare it to the Eagles being number one. Even if you look at the other side of the ball on offense the Eagles were still higher than them being eight when the Chiefs were sixteen. So on paper, the Eagles were the favorites to win this game.
During the first quarter, the Eagles only scored seven points by a Jalen Hurts touchdown run, and the Chiefs scored zero with the Eagles’ defense forcing them to punt two times in two possessions. The stand out player this quarter was Eagles’ quarterback Jalen Hurts recording 75 yards and a touchdown.
Second quarter, the Eagles forced a punt in the beginning and used that momentum to score a 48-yard field goal. Soon after, the Eagles’ defensive line recorded two back-to-back sacks on Patrick Mahomes. The very next play Mahomes was forced out of the pocket and threw an interception to rookie cornerback Cooper DeJean and he took it 38 yards for an Eagles touchdown (fun fact it was Cooper DeJean and Saquon Barkley’s birthday the same day as the Super Bowl). The Eagles’ defensive line sacked Mahomes for the third time this quarter to force another Chiefs’ punt. After the punt, running back Saquon Barkley broke a run to get the first down but the play, but the Chiefs made a huge play and sacked Hurts for a six-yard loss. Shortly after the sack the Chiefs had a penalty called on them but luckily still stopped the Eagles forcing a punt. Unfortunately, the Chiefs couldn’t capitalize on this punt and Mahomes threw another interception in the Eagles’ 14-yard line this time to middle linebacker Zack Baun, after this Hurts threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to wide-receiver AJ Brown to go up at half 24-0. The stand out player of this quarter was Eagles’ cornerback Cooper DeJean.
At the start of the third quarter, the Chiefs had the ball but they ended up having to punt it away again which led to an Eagles’ 29-yard field goal by Jake Elliott. On second and four Mahomes was rushed and made a crazy run play for the first down. However, the Chiefs’ offensive lineman Jawaan Taylor was called for a holding penalty which canceled the first down. Now on 3rd and 12, Mahomes dumped it off to Travis Kelce but was stopped short of the first down. As soon as the Eagles got the ball Hurts did a fake run to Barkley and threw a 46-yard bomb to Devonta Smith. On the next drive the Chiefs actually start to move the ball down the field, Mahomes finds an open target, Xavier Worthy for the 50-yard touchdown pass with only 34 seconds left in the third. Unfortunately, they do not get the two-point conversion. The stand out player of this quarter was Devonta Smith of the Eagles, recording 52 receiving yards and a touchdown.
During the fourth quarter, the Eagles marched their way down and scored an early 48-yard field goal to go up 37-6. The first play of the Chiefs’ drive, Mahomes was strip-sacked and gave the Eagles great field position at Kansas City’s 33-yard line. Jake Elliot kicked another field goal to add three points to the Eagles’ score. Mahomes connected with DeAndre Hopkins for a seven-yard touchdown, and the Chiefs gained a two-point conversion. The Eagles’ drive wasn’t too great, punting the ball back to KC, which the Chiefs capitalized on to and scored a one-play touchdown to Xavier Worthy and another two-point conversion. Sadly for the Chiefs, this game was over with the final score being 40-22. The player of this quarter was Xavier Worthy with 74 yards and a touchdown.
