On February 1, 2025, the Lowellville students dressed in their finest attire for the annual Sweethearts Dance. This event is a tradition, filled with music, dancing, and the crowning of the Sweetheart King and Queen, bringing students together for a night to remember.
The selection for the Sweethearts Court, including the voting for King and Queen, took place through a student vote held earlier in the week. The Sweethearts Court consisted of senior girls Makenna Beeson, Gianna Clement, Maddie Esposito, Morgan Lewis, and Laila Rivera, along with senior boys Bobby Lofus, Liam Bartlett, Christian Coira, Cody Nolfi, and Anthony Vrabel. The court members were introduced to the attendees in the gymnasium prior to the dance. The members of the court were escorted down the half-court line on the basketball court. The court members lined up against the decorated balloon arch in the colors of gold and purplewith curtains on the sides. The final people introduced were last year’s King and Queen, Vinny Perry and Sophia Alfano, along with the crown bearers. Crown bearers were 6 year old,Enzley Shuluga, and 5 year old, Ryan Mistovich. After the much-anticipated wait, the Sweetheart King was Cody Nolfi, crowned by Vinny Perry, and the Sweetheart Queen was Morgan Lewis, crowned by Sophia Alfano.
Morgan was not expecting to win the queen title. She said, “I was shocked but very happy.” Following the dance, Morgan celebrated her crowning with her friends at dinner. “The dance was very fun! It was a good way to spend time with friends.”
Cody was very appreciative that he was able to win king, after being on Prom and Homecoming Court. Cody said his favorite part of the dance was being with his friends, dancing with his girlfriend, and having a fun time with everybody.
The cafeteria was transformed into the perfect school dance environment, the tables were decorated with fresh flowers and tablecloths to match the theme. There was also a DJ, a dessert corner, and a photographer to get couple or group pictures. The DJ kept the energy alive by playing a variety of music such as chart-toppers, nostalgic throwbacks, and slow songs. Aside from dancing, students enjoyed refreshments such as cheesecake, chips, water, and pop before heading back to the dance floor.
The attendees were dressed in their best trendy and classic fashion choices for the dance. The more trendy dresses were short and not too flashy. The classic dresses were long, simple dresses. Many of the girls’ dresses were red, pink, and black to match the Valentine’s theme and accessories included sparkling jewelry, stylish heels, and complementary flowers to match the outfits.
For many, the best part of the dance is getting dressed up and seeing everyone else dressed up because it’s good to get out of our normal school clothes. Freshman Nick Scott was lexcited because it was his first Sweetheart Dance. He was excited to experience the event and spend time with his friends.
Sophomore Kenna Lewis said that leading up to the night of the dance she was a little nervous, but she was excited to have a good time with her sister and friends. Kenna described the dance as a “very energetic environment.”
Junior Giuliana Alfano shared that she was most excited about being able to dress up and get ready for pictures. Next year, Giuliana is most looking forward to the Sweethearts Court, and getting dressed up. Her favorite part of the dance was going out to dinner with and hanging out with her friends after.
Senior Christian Coira, described leading up to the night of the dance to be exciting but a little bit nerve racking.“ I’m a last minute planner so I didn’t get a suit until a few days before the dance like I do with all of the dances. This one was cutting it close though.” Christian said his favorite part of the night was “Probably going to go eat at Alberinis with my friends. I have never been there and the food was amazing.” Knowing this was his last Sweethearts Dance it was bittersweet. “I have been in Lowellville over half my life and grew very close with a lot of people I even consider family now. It is very sad that I’m leaving but I’m excited to go to college and start the next chapter.”
The Sweetheart Dance was a mixture of tradition, excitement, and making memories. Whether it was seniors’ last dance or freshmens’ first dance, the music, food, pictures, and time spent with friends are lasting memories students will have for a long time to come. Congratulations to this year’s Sweethearts’ King and Queen, Morgan Lewis and Cody Nolfi.
