On March 14, 2025, our school hosted their annual Pi Day fundraiser assembly. The event took place in the gym, where students’ names were drawn from buckets to pie their selected teacher in the face. This year, a new addition was introduced, a pie eating contest where students raced to find a hidden piece of gum in a whipped cream pie to win a fun prize.
Mrs. Streb and Mrs. Firmstone have organized the pie day assembly together for the last two years. “Mrs. Firmstone and myself work in the math classrooms and have a love for math. We knew 3.14 or Pi Day would be a fun and exciting fundraiser to help the junior class raise money,” said Mrs. Streb.
Mrs. Firmstone said, “Pi Day proceeds benefit the Junior Class. Any money raised by the junior class is used to fund the homecoming dances and prom each year.”
The pie eating contest was a new edition this year. Mrs. Firmstone said, “This year, we decided to try to include the student body a little more. We sold tickets for students to have a chance to be a part of a pie eating contest. We picked 12 tickets out of those that were sold and those 12 students were split into two groups. The students had to eat to the bottom of a whipped cream pie, find a piece of bubblegum, and blow a bubble, all with no hands. The student who blew the bubble first was awarded a free dress down week.”
A total of 727 tickets were sold this year between the pie eating contest and the pie in the face of a teacher. Third grader Issac White and fourth grader Baelleigh Petrus were the two winners from the pie eating contest.
Two senior students volunteered to get pied in the face, Caitllyn Woolweaver and Spencer Simione. They volunteered just for the fun of it and to make memories. Caitlyn said, “I volunteered to get pied in the face because it seemed like a fun and exciting way to celebrate. Getting pied with my friend Spencer made the whole experience even more fun and memorable. When the pies hit us, we couldn’t stop laughing.” When asked if she’d volunteer to do it again Caitlyn agreed that she would. She loved bringing laughter to the school.
Spencer said it was an enjoyable experience to be a part of and he’s wanted to do it for a long time. Overall Spencer said, “It was a little nerve-wracking at first though just due to the fact I was being pied in the face but overall it was very exciting and a fun experience.”
There are plenty of challenges that come with planning this event. Mrs. Firmstone said, “Finding staff who want to be pied, getting student volunteers to sell tickets, and making sure the assembly runs smoothly is always on our minds. After this year, we noticed that a challenge for students and staff was being able to see everyone being pied, so next year we would look at having smaller groups of teachers in each round.”
Mrs. Firmstone and Mrs. Streb agreed that the annual Pi Day assembly had a positive impact on school spirit. Mrs. Streb said, “I believe that the students enjoyed this event and hope that it brought school spirit by getting all the students together and involved in the activities.”
Overall the annual Pi Day fundraiser continues to be a fun and memorable event. With the exciting activities like the pie in the face drawing and the new pie eating contest, the assembly not only raises money for upcoming events, but brings the school together for some fun!
