The fifth-grade class took part in the annual three-day trip to Camp Fitch on April 28-30, 2025. This trip is a tradition that gives students the chance to experience the great outdoors while building teamwork and independence. Along the scenic shores of Lake Erie, Camp Fitch offered a wide range of fun and educational activities such as archery, hiking, campfires, and group challenges. The trip was a memorable experience for everyone involved, creating lasting friendships and giving students the opportunity to learn and grow outside the classroom. Many of the high school students returned to Camp Fitch, only this time, they were mentors and counselors for the fifth graders.
Senior Morgan Lewis had the opportunity to be a student counselor for the trip. Morgan’s favorite activity was the camp fire that was hosted on the last night of camp, along with the campfire songs. She really enjoyed the candle making craft. For her, the most challenging part of being a counselor was making sure all the kids kept with the group at all times. Morgan shared why she decided to go back to Camp Fitch as a student councilor. She said, “Doing all of the activities and making sure the kids were having a good time like I did when I went.”
Sophomore John Swanson also had the opportunity to attend the trip. John said his favorite part of chaperoning the trip was getting to know the kids and helping them when needed. John said the activity he enjoyed the most was canoeing. He said the most challenging part of being a counselor was getting the kids to go to bed and wake up on time. John said he wanted to be a counselor because he missed out on the experience when he was little. He said, “When I first went to Camp Fitch I didn’t get to go for the full three days, so I wanted to make sure that the fifth graders got to enjoy the trip to their fullest.”
Overall, the Camp Fitch trip was a rewarding experience for the high school counselors who joined them. Through outdoor activities, hands-on activities, and various challenges, the trip helps everyone grow and gain responsibility. For student counselors like Morgan, John, and myself, it was a chance to give back and learn new responsibilities.
