Every year the Wellness Club hosts a Field Day for students in kindergarten through 6th grade to take a break from school work and enjoy a day outside having fun.
They plan activities like the fun station, tug-of-war, water balloon toss and old school relays. There’s also one minute basketball, octopus tag, the softball throw, open play recess, and track events. The older students participate in the long jump, 100-meter dash, and 400-meter dash, while the younger students run the 50- and 200-meter dashes in the morning.
After lunch, the 4th, 5th, and 6th graders played kickball on the football field, with help from students in the Wellness Club.
Throughout the school year, the Wellness Club members act as excellent role models by mentoring the elementary students in their academics and teaching them how to be respectful, inclusive, safe, and engaged, which are important qualities for participating in field day. On field day, the Wellness Club members helped set up the events and assisted the elementary students at each station.
Most elementary students said they were most excited about the track events and the kickball game.
The next day, the elementary students had Carnival Day. Carnival Day included bounce houses, obstacle courses, slides, and fun games. It also included a dunk tank and Kona Ice for all elementary and high school students provided by the PTO.
5th grade teacher Mr. Olson said, ”Field day gives students the opportunity to interact with students they don’t usually see on a normal school day.” Mr. Olson also mentioned that it can help the students learn how to work towards a common goal.
Mrs. Sanders, another 5th grade teacher, said that field day allows students to engage in physical activities with their peers.
Students are already looking forward to participating in Field Day again next school year.
