The holiday season is here and houses worldwide are streaming their favorite Christmas movies. I created a poll asking Lowellville students to choose their favorite Christmas movie since there are so many to choose from. There was a tie among the most popular films for Lowellville High School students between the Home Alone series and How the Grinch Stole Christmas starring actor Jim Carrey.
These are two popular movies in the U.S. and understandably so, although the original Home Alone is personally my favorite movie of the Home Alone franchise. It is a feel-good movie that represents the importance of family on Christmas Day. Although the first and second Home Alone movies are hits, we can’t say the same for their counterparts Home Alone 3, Home Alone 4, Home Alone: The Holiday Heist, and Home Sweet Home Alone. These movies get serious backlash for not being as good as the original two.
How the Grinch Stole Christmas should have won by far, in my opinion. Jim Carrey plays his role of the Grinch perfectly, even though he is under all that makeup and has on a bodysuit you can still see the emotion in his movements and the faces he makes. This made it very difficult to still create such an amazing performance. The humor in this movie is funnier than Home Alone, with multiple scenes being completely improvised by Jim Carrey. Although this is a comedy movie it still shows an important theme of forgiveness.
Students and staff members discussed their opinions about what movie they believe is the best Christmas movie, How the Grinch Stole Christmas or Home Alone.
9th grader Daniel Huff said, “Home Alone is better because it is more entertaining and there are more movies to the franchise.”
Paola Andino, a 9th grader, said, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas is better because it is fun and energetic.”
Mr. Nick Ballone said, “Home Alone is better because it is more entertaining and there is more stuff happening.”
If you are looking for a Christmas movie to watch with your family or even just by yourself I would recommend watching one of these two movies or both. If you do watch them answer the poll below to tell us your favorite of the two.
