Lowellville has faced challenges with student attendance in the past few years. To help improve this, the Stay in the Game campaign, a statewide attendance initiative in collaboration with the Cleveland Browns, the Department of Education, and local schools, promotes awareness about the importance of good attendance. Stay in the Game encourages students to come to school by offering rewards for consistent attendance.
After Christmas break, coming to school is a struggle for many students. Students get comfortable with the idea of not going to school. This year assistant principal, Mr. Hammond, challenged the students in grades 7-12 during the months of December and January to come to school everyday. The grade who had the best attendance during the challenge was rewarded with a bowling trip. Throughout the challenge both the seniors and 7th graders had a very close race. The seniors ultimately ended up winning the challenge with a 91.8% attendance rate. The 7th graders close behind with 91.4%.
Mr. Hammond shared, “Staying in the game helps promote students having good attendance while making school more fun for students and helping them to enjoy being with friends and learning.”
The senior class took their bowling trip to Holiday Lanes in Struthers on February 13, 2025. Only senior students who had less than 11 hours of absences were able to attend. The seniors who earned the trip were Elizabeth Rossi, Morgan Lewis, Nick Donatelli and Connor Anderson. This trip helped promote the message of staying in the game and motivates other students to strive for good attendance in the future.
Seniors Elizabeth Rossi and Nick Donatelli shared they were both excited for the senior bowling trip. Elizabeth shared, “This is a great way to push students to keep coming to school and have better attendance.”
Connor Anderson, who also bowls on the school’s bowling team, added it was a fun event and he was glad he was able to bring his own bowling ball and get some practice.
Mr. Hammond said elementary students are currently participating in an attendance challenge. The challenge is for grade levels with a 96% attendance rate or better on the daily attendance report. The grade levels with the 96% or better receive a popcorn kernel on the display board. The grade level with the most kernels in the end will win a prize.
It is important for students to always Stay in the Game and maintain good attendance. Staying in the Game and having consistently good attendance helps you succeed in and out of school.
