From creative costumes to spooky decorations, Halloween has become a celebratory event in our school and community. It’s a time for students and staff to embrace the season’s fun and spirit. Aside from the candy and costumes, our high school and elementary Halloween traditions have been anticipated since the beginning of the year.
Seniors Christian Coira and Connor Anderson’s favorite Halloween tradition is the school-wide assembly, especially the senior costume contest. They look forward to coming up with costume ideas and seeing what other students and teachers choose to dress as. They both agree that adding a high school trick-or-treat would be fun. This would consist of students dressing up and going door-to-door to the classrooms trick-or-treating for candy from all the teachers.
Connor thinks the most memorable student costumes were last year’s seniors, Connor Binion and Michael Katula, who dressed up as characters from Up.
Christian enjoys seeing what costumes Dr. Hale comes up with each year. Christian stated that “He usually goes all out so I’m excited to see what he does this year.” Unfortunately, Dr. Hale was not at this year’s assembly, but Mr. Solak quickly gained cheers from the crowd as he dressed up as Dr. Hale.
Freshmen Reese Goodman and Livia Dutton’s favorite Halloween tradition is the costume contest and school-wide assembly. They look forward to seeing everyone’s costumes, especially the seniors and staff, and celebrating the day with their friends. They would like for the students to get more involved with the assembly. Livia suggested each grade could work together to come up with a theme and create a grade level, which would be judged by the seniors or the staff.
During the costume contest, the judges and the crowd both helped pick the winner of the best costume. Among the Seniors who participated, there were various costumes, including the Minion cast, the Ghostbusters cast, athletes, the Sonic cast, Happy Gilmore, and Coca-Cola drinks. The first place prize was a week’s worth of dress down, and it was awarded to the senior girls dressed as the Minions. The second-place award was a Starbucks gift card, which was awarded to Ghostbusters. Lastly, the third-place award was a DoorDash pass, and it was awarded to the Sonic cast.
The staff also participated in their own costume contest. The seniors and the crowd . There was a wide selection of costumes amongst the staff, which included Little Debbie and Big Debrah, baseball players, Beverly Goldberg, Dr. Hale, a lumberjack, inflatables, Chester Cheeto, a hotdog, the cast of the Minions, and Uno cards. Mr. Solak took the first place award as Dr. Hale. The second-place winners were Ms. Freed and Mrs. Esenwein as Little Debbie and Big Debrah. Lastly, third place was awarded to Mrs. Kamensky, Mr. Nock, and Ms. Carlos as the minions.
Halloween traditions in our school are more than just costumes and candy, they represent a time when students and staff get together to bring excitement and spirit to our community. From the anticipated costume contests to the idea of trick-or-treating around classrooms, the festivities create memorable experiences that students look forward to every year.
