Many Lowellville high school students are attending Mahoning County Career and Technical Center (MCCTC) to further their education in a specific area before graduation.
Mrs.Killingsworth said, “It is a high school for students all over Mahoning country regardless of the district. They teach everything that is required to graduate along with specific course work, and hands on experience in specific skill areas, like Cosmetology, Creative Arts and Design, Culinary Arts, Early Childhood Education, Aviation Maintenance, Building Construction and Remodeling, Electricity Program, Public Safety, Allied Health and Pre-Nursing, Animal/ Pre-Veterinary Science, Biomedical Science, Engineering and Robotics, Exercise Science and Physical Therapy, Networking and Cyber Security, and Software Development.”
Michelle Cavna is a senior attending MCCTC. She has been studying Public Safety. Michelle said, “I chose this program because I wanted to study criminal justice and get my firefighting certifications.” She went to MCCTC because it would have taken her time after graduating high school to complete this program and she thought it was a great opportunity while in high school. Michelle enjoys the students and staff because they make it fun and easy to learn.
James Watson is a junior at MCCTC currently studying Public Safety because he is interested in the military and law enforcement. James said, “it will be overwhelming for the first month and you’ll feel alone but over time you’ll find friends and get adjusted.” He wanted to go to MCCTC because he wanted a new start. He enjoys being in the lab for three periods because it is fun and hands-on.” James is planning on joining the National Guard after high school.
Sophomore, John Swanson is going to study the Software Engineering Program next year. For John, the most challenging part of going to a new school is making new friends, although he is looking forward to learning about new software and coding programs. John Swanson said, “Attending MCCTC will allow me to expand my knowledge into topics that interest me more. It will also allow me to start working on what I want to do as a job in the future and it will also get me closer to my dream of working with NASA.”
Sophomore, Levi Moore is studying Cyber Security in the upcoming year at MCCTC. He chose this program because he can graduate with an associates degree and start a path for his career in the future. The most challenging part of MCCTC is moving to a bigger environment and navigating the classrooms.
Michael Frohman is very excited to be studying in the Auto Tech and the Electrical program at MCCTC next year.
Kayla Weinreber is a sophomore planning to attend MCCTC next year in the Arts and Design program. Kayla has decided to go to MCCTC for active learning. Kayla is looking forward to graduating from MCCTC with Lowellville as her home school.
Lowellville students who attend MCCTC during their junior and senior years are able to participate in extracurricular activities, dances, and pep assemblies that Lowellville hosts. MCCTC is a great opportunity for students who learn easier hands on and want to get an earlier start for their selected career.
Guidance counselor Mrs Killingsworth said, ”Don’t let fear of the unknown prevent you from taking a hold of the opportunity. You always have to take a risk in order to benefit from an opportunity.”
