Should High School Have Recess?

Should High School Have Recess?

Normally recess is for elementary but no one talks about if high school should have recess. Once you get to high school, recess seems to be less important compared to core classes. Having a set recess schedule may take time away from these subjects. It could also take time away from studying. Also, not all students are going to agree with this and  would rather do work instead of playing around. Some coaches don’t want their athletes doing activities in the gym because they can possibly get hurt.  Since most high schoolers are too big or tall for the playground there would be a debate where it should take place.

I had an opportunity to ask Mr. Hammond his thoughts about high school students having recess and he thinks it would not be productive. Rather than students having a recess he thinks it would be better and students would be more engaged if they were in the gym playing volleyball, kickball, or dodgeball. High school students now have an opportunity to take Varsity Gym as an elective where students can do just that.

Girl’s junior high track coaches Tim and Jamie DeMain think recess would be a good idea.

Mrs. DeMain discussed the benefits of recess, stating, “We think it would be good to have the kids getting fresh air and have them doing things rather than just sitting around. We can’t control if someone gets hurt, anything can happen at any time.”

There are some positive aspects of having recess. It could provide students with a much-needed break to alleviate stress and allow them to enjoy the outdoors. Additionally, it offers an opportunity for physical activity for those who do not participate in sports or have gym class. Teachers could also benefit from recess by having time to relax, grade papers, socialize with colleagues, and recharge. Recess could promote social interaction among students who may not typically engage with one another.

Mr. Hammond had some thoughts about high school students having recess. He said, “I don’t see too many students being engaged in outside playground time.” He feels that the students would rather have gym. They would rather take gym volleyball, kickball, and dodgeball. as an elective.  While the addition of recess to the high school schedule seems unlikely, it remains a potential consideration for the future.
